Eileen was born shortly after her family bought the flower shop in 1980. This year (2017) Lake Forest Flowers is celebrating 100 years since its establishment in 1917. Spending most of her childhood and youth around flowers working alongside her father was the main reason she became so passionate about florals and flower arrangement. She later realized how much flowers were part of her life and decided to build her career in this field by earning a degree in Horticultural production and marketing from Purdue University. She also earned her MBA while working full time to grow her management and business skills. In 2014, Eileen was inducted into the American Academy of Floriculture for her work in the floral industry.
Her big happy smile and incredibly friendly personality made me feel so welcome and easy around her, her family and her adorable flower shop, that I could not resist to share her story (and pictures) with others. And here is what Eileen has to say about her life and business she is so passionate about.
My business is about: celebrating life’s greatest moments with flowers. Flowers make people happy! There is scientific proof of this (go to www.aboutflowers.com). I take pride in working with each client for their special event or gift in bringing their vision to reality with flowers. I am constantly inspired working with the colors, fragrances, textures and many varieties of flowers from around the world.
My passion comes from: inside… as an artist and a business woman, only some of my skills can be learned, but the passion comes from within. Flowers speak what one cannot say in words… I create floral designs that speak emotions.
My ideal client: Someone who trusts my passion and education.
Something funny happened once: when I was delivering flowers for a wedding and the groom and groomsmen did not know how to tie their ties or fold their pocket squares properly. I took care of them so they were dressed perfectly.
My biggest dream about my business: to continue the success it has had and pass it on to the 3rd generation.
Someone to be inspired by: my parents… they are the hardest working people I know. I have been following in my faather’s footsteps – yet he continues to push me to excel in all facets of life.
The best advice I got: when one door closes, another one opens.
My best advice to others: stop and smell the flowers.
What you will find me doing in my free time: gardening, golfing, exercising, cooking/baking, playing with my son.
My dream destination: Australia/New Zealand.
What makes me smile: my son smiling, a birdie in golf, the opening of a new flower in my garden, opening a box of flowers at work (it’s like Christmas everyday!)
My little guilty pleasure: drinking champagne on a Sunday morning.
My favorite quote: “Mind over Matter and nothing worth having comes easy”.
My favorite meal/food: pulled pork sandwich – especially if my husband smokes the pork shoulder.
If I could go back to my childhood, the experience I would love to re-live is: dog sledding in Canada.
The qualities I value in people the most: respect, honesty, accountability, compassion, loyalty.
I am a great friend because: I don’t judge and am a good listener. I’m only a phone call away – I am always there when a friend needs me the most.
Happiness is… Making people smile through my work and friendship.
